It seems that most video game players are male. Why do boys like video games more than girls do?

Do they? Almost half of gaming audiences in the United States are female. They're simply underrepresented.

As a male, art has always treated me well. Every action-hero is a male-character, and if not, they're an outlier or an exception (i.e. Ripley from Alien, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, and so on). Videogames are marketed toward men. Movies are marketed, more often, toward men. But I don't believe that is necessarily because women aren't drawn to it like men are. Instead, I believe women are regularly underserved, and I am hopeful that is ceasing to be the norm. Characters like Ellie from The Last of Us and Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn, less and less are we seeing overtly sexualized, one-dimensional characters, and instead, layered, fleshed out characters. They're people, even. Crazy!

A long time ago, companies made the decision to market videogames to boys in toy stores, but I believe the decision was more arbitrary / rooted in an outdated belief system, rather than because boys liking videogames more than girls.

It is generally believed that there are more male gamers compared to females but there is not enough data to back up this claim. I will answer this fun question in a funny way.
A game is one-time investment but you need to continuously invest in girls.

There is a substantial amount of data available, however, that data largely shows it is much closer than often perceived, example.

How could you forget Dr. Halsey from Halo Wars or even Cortana from Halo itself. I will admit that they began to sexualize her a bit in the later series; but, the first three Halo games saw her as just as important if not more so to the story of the Halo franchise.
